The feature is there, but in order to work it no longer has to MODIFY your package.json, which is what we used to have to do.  If you have a node_modules folder (i.e., dependencies) they are bundled. if you do not have one... it is not bundled....

 
The --bundle was a work-around for the fact  that npm would NEVER pack up the node_modules folder unless you rewrote the package.json. which was crappy, and then people would commit it by accident ...   so dep bundling occurs or not now depending on whether you installed the deps. which is very clear, and doesn't involve rewriting the poor user's package.json.
